Music while you ride?

Well, maybe not quite like this. But Patti Bills did pose an awesome discussion topic yesterday... thought I would help get a bit more buzz going around this one. If you listen to music when you ride, what's on your playlist?

I only used my iPod twice during my too-long ride in DV last year--on my hellacious journey up to Jubilee Pass, and on the last 15 miles of the ride. Somehow, having a distraction from the salt melting off my eyelashes and the incessant burning on my saddle made things a bit better. I listened to comedy--I had downloaded some stand-up tracks right before going to DV, and found that listening to someone tell me a story was actually an awesome way to keep pumping.

These days, my list has everything from Gipsy Kings to The Roots to Boston to Stevie Wonder to Irish pub songs to new rock artists I don't even know to....whatever I happen to be in the mood for, I guess.

But those doesn't work for everyone. What's on YOUR playlist? Posting of specific artists and song titles is greatly encouraged. :)

I only use an I-Pod if I'm riding alone.......so that pretty much means 95% never! Like Brother DiD I have a full-time soundtrack playin' in my head, (all to often featuring some song I can't stand and only know a few lines of) that I heard in the gas station on the way to the ride or that was hummed @ me with malice aforethought by a "friend".

Still.........my fav tunes to hammer to are "10 Men Working" by Neil Young and the Blue notes, "Viva Las Vegas" by Big Guitars From Memphis, "Math Prof Rock Star" by Jim's Big Ego and anything by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes.

I gotta say that....no offense to Sister Katie.... that if I had "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" stuck in my head during a ride I'd hafta kill myself! (However - "Son of a Preacher Man" would get'cha up Jubilee Pass for damnsure!)

Here's some lyrics from my collection of "They weren't talkin' about cycling but they coulda been" tunes:
"Now that you're mine, now that you're mine, raisin' my arms, crossin' the line." (Jason and the Scorchers)
"Now days I got me 2 good wheels...I take refuge in aluminum and steel. Takes me out there for a little while, and the years fall away w/ every mile." (Steve Earle and the Dukes)
"Let's go for a ride! Let's go for a ride! Let's go for a ride. Let's go for a ride!" (Cracker)
"All Night, all night. Got my wheels and everything's alright. Baby I could ride all night" (The Wagoneers)
The complete lyrics to "Acoustic Motorbike" by Luka Bloom, which is about cycling. ("Pedal on, pedal on, pedal on for miles, pedal on.")

Oh man........you guys are gonna be sorry this whole thing got started! I'm gonna try and stop now but I'm not sure tha.......

By the way.......looking at that pic reminds me that somewhere in my house is photographic evidence that I can play the banjo while riding my rollers.

(I wonder if we can use that as a fund-raising deal, maybe @ a cycling freak show?)

Oh, hammer tunes? Well, the one that usually comes up to my breathing rhythm while I'm trying to get home is Peaches "**** The Pain Away". Obviously I ain't repeating the lyrics here, but the beat is perfect.

Primus' "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" is another good one...

So I listen to this streaming radio station called Radio Paradise - it's a totally eclectic mix, anything from Bach to The Beatles to Mongolian throat singing. I highly recommend it. Anyway, right now they're playing something sort of indescribable by Ramasutra called "Kwaidan". It's got that perfect slow rhythm for a riding...

You've never lived until you've heard Huun-Huur-Tu cut loose, man.

I will listen to ANYTHING to not be thinking about being on a bike after 50 miles. I don't hammer, ever.
